Quick Answer

A grouted mattress (Geotextile Grout-Filled Mattress, GGFM) is a flexible concrete erosion protection system. Two layers of woven polypropylene geotextile are stitched into a grid, laid flat on any surface — slopes, canal beds, or underwater — then filled with cement grout through a standard pump truck. It installs without dewatering, conforms to the exact profile of the subgrade, and reaches ≥17 MPa compressive strength at 28 days. GRI GT16-compliant. Design life: 50+ years.

What It Is

What Is a Standard Grouted Mattress?

A standard grouted mattress consists of two layers of woven polypropylene geotextile stitched together in a grid pattern. The fabric rolls out flat on any surface — slopes, canal beds, or underwater — and is then filled with fine-aggregate cement grout via a standard pump truck.

The result is a rigid, articulated concrete armour that follows the exact profile of the subgrade — no formwork, no dewatering, no specialist plant. The system reaches full design strength (≥17 MPa) at 28 days and has a design life of 50+ years.

Flexibility
Articulates at joints — tolerates settlement and uneven subgrade
Speed
800–1,200 m² per 8-hour shift per pump unit
Versatility
Works on slopes, flat beds, and underwater without modification
Durability
50+ year design life; no periodic replacement or re-grading

How Is Grouted Mattress Installed?

01

Subgrade Preparation

Grade to -30 mm of design profile. Remove stones > 50 mm. Install separator geotextile where CBR < 3%.

02

Panel Layout & Anchoring

Unroll panels from top of slope downward. Overlap adjacent panels by 300 mm minimum. Pin top edge at 2 m centres.

03

Grout Injection

Connect pump hose to bottom injection port. Pump at 15–25 m²/hour. Move injection point at 1 m intervals along the panel.

04

Curing & Inspection

Mist with water within 30 minutes of completion. Maintain damp for 7 days. Take grout cubes at 1 set per 50 m².

Installation Output Rate
One pump unit + two mixer trucks = 800–1,200 m² per 8-hour shift. A 3 m wide trapezoidal canal can be lined at 200–300 linear metres per shift.

FAQ

Grouted Mattress: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order quantity?

There is no minimum order quantity. We supply single panels for repair works and multi-million m² for national infrastructure programmes. Unit pricing scales with volume — contact us for a quote based on your project area.

Does the price include the grout?

No. We supply the geotextile mattress fabric; grout is batched on-site using a standard concrete mix (w/c 0.45–0.50, 10 mm aggregate) with a conventional pump truck. We provide the mix design specification with every order at no charge.

What panel sizes are available?

Standard panels are up to 6 m wide and up to 30 m long. Custom widths and lengths to suit your canal cross-section or slope geometry are fabricated within the 48-hour dispatch window at no extra cost.

How long does sea freight take to reach my country?

Typical sea freight transit times from Tianjin port: Southeast Asia 5–12 days, Middle East 18–25 days, East Africa 20–28 days, Europe 28–35 days. Air freight is available for urgent small quantities. Contact us with your destination port for a landed cost estimate.

Can I get a sample panel before placing an order?

Yes. We can send a 500 mm - 500 mm fabric sample (unfilled) by courier for material evaluation. Request via email to james@concretemattress.com with your delivery address.

Do you provide installation support?

Yes — engineering support is included on all qualified orders. This covers grout mix design, installation method statement, crew briefing, and on-site supervision upon request. See our Engineering Support page for details.

We specified GRI GT16 compliance as a hard requirement. HydroBase submitted third-party test certificates before we even asked — that level of documentation readiness made the approval process straightforward.

Senior Procurement Engineer
Canal Lining - 78,000 m²

Lead time was our concern — we had a 6-week window before the dry season closed. HydroBase dispatched within 48 hours of PO confirmation. The mattresses arrived on site with 10 days to spare.

Project Manager
Slope Protection - 42,000 m²

James responded to our technical queries on the same day, including a Sunday. The installation guide was clear enough that our local crew required only one day of phone support during grouting.
