Quick Answer

Articulated concrete mattress (ACM) is the same product as grouted mattress, GGFM (Geotextile Grout-Filled Mattress), and fabric formed concrete. The name varies by region and specification standard — ACM is common in North America and Australia; GGFM is used in the GRI GT16 standard; "grouted mattress" is standard in the UK and Asia. All refer to a two-layer woven polypropylene geotextile filled with cement grout in situ. HydroBase manufactures all three configurations (Standard, Filter Point, Vegetated) to GRI GT16 from our Inner Mongolia factory — 48-hour dispatch, factory-direct to 30+ countries.

Terminology Note

Articulated concrete mattress (ACM), grouted mattress, GGFM, geotextile grout-filled mattress, and fabric formed concrete all describe the same product. The terminology varies by region and specification standard — ACM is common in North America and Australia; GGFM is used in GRI GT16; "grouted mattress" is standard in the UK and Asia. HydroBase manufactures all three variants (Standard, Filter Point, Vegetated) under the GRI GT16 standard, regardless of which name appears in your specification.

What Is ACM

What Is an Articulated Concrete Mattress?

An articulated concrete mattress is a flexible erosion protection system made from two layers of woven polypropylene geotextile stitched into a grid of cells. The fabric is laid flat on the surface to be protected, then filled with cement grout pumped through injection ports. When cured, the result is a continuous array of concrete cells that can flex and articulate with the underlying surface.

The "articulated" name refers to this flexibility — unlike a rigid concrete slab, the mattress conforms to settlement, scour voids, and irregular bank profiles. Individual cells hinge relative to each other, distributing load and maintaining contact with the substrate across the entire surface area.

The system installs without dewatering, without formwork, and without specialist equipment beyond a standard concrete pump truck. This makes it significantly faster and cheaper than conventional poured concrete protection on most site configurations.

Three ACM Variants

HydroBase manufactures three configurations of articulated concrete mattress, each designed for a specific site condition.

Standard ACM fabric texture
Most Common

Standard ACM

Fully impermeable. Used for canal lining, slope protection, river bank revetment, and bridge pier scour. Available 75–200 mm. The standard specification in most project documents.

  • 75–200 mm thickness
  • Up to 6.0 m/s flow rated
  • 0% cell void ratio
  • Manning's n ≈ 0.013–.016
Filter Point ACM fabric texture
Tidal / Artesian Sites

Filter Point ACM

Drainage openings at cell intersections relieve hydrostatic uplift. Required for coastal revetment, tidal embankments, flood retention banks, and artesian sites.

  • 75–200 mm thickness
  • Filter ports at cell nodes
  • Tidal uplift rated
  • Same GRI GT16 compliance
Vegetated ACM fabric texture
Ecological Applications

Vegetated ACM

Open-cell fabric allows vegetation to establish through the cured concrete matrix. Used for ecological slope protection on highway embankments and river corridors.

  • 100–200 mm thickness
  • 15–20% open cell ratio
  • Vegetation establishment
  • Full structural rating

FAQ

Engineers Ask Before Specifying

Is articulated concrete mattress the same as grouted mattress?+
Yes - ACM, grouted mattress, GGFM (Geotextile Grout-Filled Mattress), and fabric formed concrete all refer to the same product family. The term varies by region and standard. HydroBase manufactures to GRI GT16, which uses GGFM. North American specs say ACM; UK and international contracts say grouted mattress.
Does your ACM comply with GRI GT16?+
Yes. Third-party test reports from an ISO 17025-accredited laboratory are included with every shipment, covering tensile strength, CBR puncture resistance, permittivity, and apparent opening size versus the GRI GT16 minimum acceptance values.
What thicknesses are available?+
50, 75, 100, 125, 150, and 200 mm. Thickness is selected based on design flow velocity, slope angle, and hydraulic loading. Our engineers provide a free thickness recommendation from your site parameters.
Can it be installed without dewatering?+
Yes. The geotextile fabric is placed in live flow, then filled with cement grout through injection ports using a standard pump truck. No cofferdam or flow diversion is required. We have placed in velocities up to 2 m/s during installation.
What panel sizes do you supply?+
Up to 6 m wide and 30 m long. Custom dimensions to fit your section or slope geometry are fabricated within the 48-hour dispatch window at no extra cost.
Is there a minimum order quantity?+
No. We supply single replacement panels through to multi-million m2 national programmes. Contact us with your project area for unit pricing.
Do you supply the grout?+
No. Grout is batched on-site (OPC, w/c 0.45-0.50, 10 mm aggregate, standard pump truck). We include the mix design specification, grout schedule, and pump setup guide with every order.
How long does delivery take?+
48-hour dispatch from Inner Mongolia. Sea freight: Southeast Asia 5-12 days, Middle East 18-25 days, East Africa 20-28 days, Europe 28-35 days. Air freight available for urgent quantities.
